B1 exam format
The telc B1 exam consists of an oral and a written part. Both parts are taken on the same day. The written exam lasts a total of 120 minutes. The oral exam is taken in pairs and lasts 15 minutes.
In the written part of the exam, competences in the areas of reading comprehension, language building blocks (grammar and vocabulary), listening comprehension and written expression are tested. You have a total of 90 minutes for the reading comprehension and language components. The listening comprehension and written expression sections each take 30 minutes.
In the reading comprehension section, the three sub-skills global comprehension, partial comprehension and selective comprehension are tested. Global comprehension is about understanding the main content of short texts. Detailed comprehension tests whether you can filter out specific information from a text. In selective comprehension, you have to prove that you understand whether a text contains the requested information or not. The tasks are divided into multiple choice and matching tasks.
Language building blocks is divided into the areas of grammar and vocabulary (lexis). In both areas, the aim is to fill in gaps in a text with one of several given answer options (multiple choice).
In the listening comprehension section, the same sub-skills are tested as in reading comprehension: global comprehension, partial comprehension and selective comprehension. The tasks in all areas have a true-false format.
In the written expression section, you have the task of writing an informal or semi-formal e-mail based on four key points.
Oral expression is divided into three parts. In the first part, you and your exam partner get to know each other with the help of a few key questions. You will then discuss a controversial topic on which you have read a text during the preparation period. The final task is to work out a programme together by making suggestions, reacting to your partner's suggestions and then making decisions together.

The written exam consists of listening, reading, language modules and writing.
The listening part lasts 25 minutes. You will be tested on whether you can understand telephone announcements, everyday conversations, meetings or interviews and different opinions on a topic. The tasks are divided into multiple choice, true-false and matching formats.
You have a total of 60 minutes for the reading and language components.
In reading, you will prove that you understand e-mails globally, forum posts, different types of reading texts, e.g. instructions and circulars, and regulatory texts. Here, too, there are multiple choice, true-false and matching tasks.

One is about communication in a professional context and the other is about communication between colleagues. In each case, you will be given three key questions or hints on content-related aspects that should appear in your text.
The oral exam consists of three tasks. The first task is to speak spontaneously about experiences and opinions. You and your partner will each comment on an illustration depicting an activity. Follow-up questions from the examiner will encourage you or your partner to talk about your own experiences on the topic, for example. You and the other candidate then present the topic that you have worked on during the preparation time independently of each other. Based on the short presentation, the other candidate will ask follow-up questions. The final task is for you and your partner to conduct a job-orientated planning discussion together.
